One of the great events I had the pleasure to attend during inauguration weekend was the Manifest Hope: DC Gallery in Georgetown. The free exhibit featured works from Shepard Fairey and several other artists across the nation celebrating Obama’s grassroots campaign. Fairey is best known for his Barack Obama posters (which some have called “the defining image of the presidential campaign”) and was also a host of the gallery, alongside Evolutionary Media Group.
With themes ranging from photos of President Obama and his family to health-care reform, workers’ rights, and the green economy, the mood in the gallery was one of optimism and pride (the live DJ also helped to keep the mood light.) A few of the artists were even kind enough to make themselves available for conversation and photos at the event, answering questions regarding their inspiration for various pieces. Photos were allowed, making it possible for all visitors to take home the image of the works which really moved them that day. There was an also an option to buy the works on-site if there was a piece you simply had to own.
And in case you are as excited by the Hollywood types hanging around DC as I am, the gallery also hosted the Manifest Hope: Inauguration Party on January 19th. Celebrity guest appearances included Michael Stipe, Rosario Dawson, Alicia Witt, Heather Graham, De La Soul, Moby, and Shepard Fairey.
