How to Celebrate Halloween Social Media Style

Ah yes, it’s that time of year again.  It’s the time of year for trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins, visiting corn mazes, throwing costume parties, reading ghost stories, watching horror film marathons, and eating way too much candy.  I am of course talking about the spookiest holiday of them all, Halloween.  This year, why not celebrate Halloween social media style?  Below is a list of five ways to add a little social media “flare” to your Halloween festivities.

(1)    Social Media Themed Costumes:

Aren’t you tired of traditional Halloween costumes?  Dressing up like a witch, ghost, or goblin is a little overdone, so why not push the envelope and make a social media themed Halloween costume?

(2)    Social Media Jack-O-Lanterns:

This year New Media Strategies is having its first annual Pumpkin carving.  That got me thinking: why not carve a pumpkin with a social media icon? For example:

(3) Change Your Social Media “Share” Icons:

There was always one house in your neighborhood that went a little overboard for Halloween decorations.  They had everything from spooky spiders to fake gravestones and inflatable monsters.  Sure, that was cool in the 90s, but times have changed.  In the digital age, why not dress up your web site or blog with a little Halloween spirit?  Check out these cool Halloween-inspired social media “share” icons, and feel free to use them.  There’s also a great list of icons here.

(4)    Make a Spooky Music Playlist:

Using social media music services like The Hype Machine, you can put together a Halloween themed playlist to for your upcoming costume party.  There are tons of songs out there, but I would recommend started with the Halloween Theme Song, Monster Mash, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

(5)    Foursquare-o-ween:

Last but not least, you can use Foursquare to have fun on Halloween.  There are tons of corn mazes and haunted houses that pop up this time year, and they are mayor-less.  That’s where you step in. If you can hold on to the mayor at a venue through Halloween, no one will be able to take it back from you until next year. Another idea is to check-in to some new venues while you’re trick-or-treating.  Who knows, you may unlock some new badges.

The list of possibilities is endless.  Feel free to comment on this post with new ideas on how to celebrate Halloween social media style.  Everyone have a happy Halloween, and remember: don’t eat too much candy.
